Make a Difference: an Inspirational Story

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a figure in the distance. As he got closer, he realized the figure was a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked "What are you doing?" The boy replied "Throwing a starfish into the ocean. The sun is up and the tide is going down. If I don't throw them back, they'll die.”

"Son," the man said "Don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't possibly make a difference."

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said, "I made a difference for that one.”

Moral of the story (from my point of view):

We don’t have to do great things to help others. We sometimes ask ourselves, “How can I help those poor people? I don’t have lots of money.”

There are many ways to do when we want to make a difference in people’s life. One of the simplest things we can do is smile. Yes, smile! When we walk down on the street, smile to every stranger we meet. No matter they will think us crazy, just smile. We will never know that our smile can make someone’s day a lot better.

We don’t always need money to help others. When we can, for example, give a free hug to someone who is in despair, I am sure it makes that person feel better. The hug means so much for that person.

I remember the movie called Pay It Forward. It’s one of my favorite movies. In that movie, the boy intended to do good things for 3 people, and each of those 3 people had to do good things for other 3 people. Then, there will be 9 people receiving good things. And it continued to other 3 people, and other 3 people.

So basically, we can start to make a difference on someone’s life. Just someone. That someone can make a difference to another person’s life. And it goes like this again and again. And guess how many lives have we made a difference on?
