Gado-Gado Recipe Plus Savory Peanut Sauce

Indonesian Vegetable Salad Recipe

Living far away from my hometown, Indonesia, often leaves me foodsick. One of my favorite Indonesian dishes is gado-gado; an Indonesian vegetable salad. Gado-gado is essentially a mix of steamed vegetables poured with peanut sauce. Because it's based on vegetables, gado-gado is apt for vegetarians and vegans. Simply remove the eggs if you are a vegan.

When I was living in Yogyakarta, I used to buy gado-gado in a local street restaurant nearby. I used to pay attention to how the seller made the peanut sauce and mixed it with the veggies. I recall the recipe quite well, so I'm going to share this delicious gado-gado recipe with you guys.

Indonesian Vegetable Salad Recipe
  • spinach
  • carrots
  • green bean
  • bean sprouts
  • potatoes
  • tofu
  • boiled eggs
  • 250 gr peanuts, roasted
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • chilies
  • 2 tamarind, soaked in water
  • 3 lime leaves (daun jeruk purut)
  • 2 tbsp palm sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 400 ml water (roughly)
  1. Steam all the veggies, but don't overcook them. Leave to cool.
  2. Fry the tofu. If you prefer, you can also steam it for a healthier choice.
  3. Grind garlic, chilies, lime leaves, and palm sugar. Add salt.
  4. Grind peanuts. Add tamarind water.
  5. Mix the grinded peanuts with the grounded spice. Pour the water to it to a smooth puree.
  6. Serve gado-gado by arranging all the veggies on a plate. Put the eggs on the top, then pour the peanut puree on it.
You can basically use the peanut sauce in everything. I often add my homemade peanut sauce with fried eggs and rice for lunch or dinner. It's simple, yet tasty!

Let me know if you try to make this gado-gado. Share your experience in the comment below.

Have a great Thursday!
